A More Human Approach to Travel Operations in Southeast Asia

Building Long-Term Local Expertise Across Southeast Asia

In tourism, itineraries can be replicated. Hotels can be booked. Transportation can be arranged.

But what travelers often remember most are the people they meet along the way.

For many years, ASEV Travel has chosen to work with salaried guides, a model that remains relatively uncommon in the tourism industry, where freelance operations are often the standard. While this approach requires greater long-term investment, it reflects how ASEV views travel operations across Southeast Asia: not simply as logistics, but as a human experience built on continuity, local knowledge, and trust.

Beyond guiding itself, these field teams play an important role in maintaining operational consistency, supporting travelers on the ground, and ensuring smoother coordination between destinations, suppliers, and daily operations. This long-term structure also allows ASEV to retain experienced local professionals who understand not only the destinations themselves, but also the expectations, pacing, and cultural sensitivities involved in international travel.

Today, ASEV Travel works with salaried guides across several destinations in Southeast Asia, including:

  • 1 salaried guide in Vietnam
  • 3 salaried guides in Laos
  • 5 salaried guides in Cambodia

While these numbers may appear modest compared to large-scale tourism operations, they reflect ASEV’s long-term commitment to maintaining experienced local teams directly involved in day-to-day operations and traveler support on the ground.

Meet the People Behind ASEV Journeys

In Laos, Chanthalangsy, known as Air,  has been accompanying ASEV travelers since 2020. For him, guiding goes beyond showing landscapes or monuments.

“What I love most is sharing an authentic and human side of Laos,” he explains.

Across journeys linking Luang Prabang, Vang Vieng, Pakbeng, or the Mekong region, his role often becomes one of cultural connection between travelers and local communities.

In Cambodia, Benjamin accompanies travelers through some of the country’s most iconic cultural sites, including Angkor and Battambang. Yet for him, the emotional dimension of travel remains just as important as the historical one.

“Seeing the wonder in travellers’ eyes as they gaze upon Angkor is always a unique moment.”

In Vietnam, Mr. Binh, who has been accompanying ASEV travelers since 2022, shares a similar philosophy while guiding travelers from Hanoi and Halong Bay to Hoi An and the Mekong Delta.

“What I love most is sharing Vietnam beyond the usual must-sees.”

This human-centered approach becomes especially meaningful throughout multi-country itineraries, where continuity on the ground can significantly shape the overall travel experience.

Several of ASEV’s regional programs reflect this philosophy, including journeys across Laos, Cambodia, Vietnam, and combined Thailand–Laos itineraries. These programs combine cultural discovery, local encounters, nature experiences, and slower travel rhythms designed to help travelers engage more deeply with the destinations they visit.

At a time when tourism is becoming increasingly automated and standardized, ASEV continues to believe that people remain at the center of meaningful travel experiences. Behind every arrival, every local interaction, and every itinerary across Southeast Asia, there are dedicated teams helping transform travel from a simple program into something more personal and memorable.

Programs Brought to Life by ASEV Local Teams

The value of experienced field teams becomes especially visible throughout the multi-destination journeys ASEV operates across Southeast Asia.

From cultural discovery in Cambodia to railway journeys through Laos or heritage routes across Vietnam, these programs rely heavily on local coordination and on-the-ground support to ensure smooth operations and meaningful traveler experiences.
