Laos stretches over an area of 236,000km2 and over 1000km in length. It is borded to the north by China, to the north-west by Myanmar, to the west by Thailand and to the south by Cambodia and Vietnam.

It is the only land-locked country of the Indochinese peninsula. As only river, the Mekong crosses the whole country and serves as natural border.
